The Historical Sources of Studying the History of the Southern Part of Jordan during the Byzantine Period (324-636 DD)

This paper focuses on the various historical sources that were concerned with the history of the southern part of Jordan during the Byzantine Period (324 - 636 AD). While the paper shows the importance of the Islamic sources such as biographies, geography books and conquest books, it discusses some of the Byzantine and Syriac historical sources. The paper discuses and clarifies the importance of the inscriptions that have been discovered in many places in the southern part of Jordan, the Byzantine Military documents in addition to the papyri that were discovered in Petra in 1993. These sources, inscriptions, documents and papyri help reveal economic conditions in Petra and the surrounding areas.
