The Festival of Nebi (Prophet) Hārūn in Petra. A History of the Festival and the Sanctuary

This research sheds light on the history of the Festival of Nebi (Prophet) Hārūn in
Petra and the sanctuary during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It focuses on
a description of the Nabi Hārūn shrine and references to the Prophet Hārūn in
ancient, Byzantine and Islamic sources, as well as the accounts of the European
travellers who visited Petra between the 18th and 20th century.
The research discusses the historical roots of the Festival of Nabi Hārūn, its
history and customs related to visitation of the shrine, based on historical accounts
and structured personal interviews with informants (both men and women) who
experienced the feast and participated in it.
