Ottoman-Islamic Architecture in Jordan. The Syrian Hajj Fort of al-Fudayn/al-Mafraq as a Case Study

The article studies the Ottoman hajj fort of al-Fudayn as an example of Ottoman-Islamic architecture in the city of al-Mafraq and as an example of the forts that the Ottomans established to provide security along the Syrian hajj route and stations for the pilgrims to rest and receive needed services. The study shows the historical importance of al-Mafraq and the al-Fudayn archaeological site and sheds light on the Ottoman hajj fort through a description of the site in general and its architectural details through spatial and functional analysis. The study presents a reconstruction of the fort before its demolition, based on other Ottoman hajj forts in the region.
