Muhammad Majed Al-Hazmawi

The aim of this study is to explore the phenomenon of debts in Jerusalem and its neighboring
villages during the second half of the 19th century. Based on the records of the Islamic court, as its
main source, this study deals with the different kinds of debts that were known at that time as well
as the debts between the different religious groups (Muslims - Christians - Jews).
Finally, the study sheds light on the different means by which the merchants were paid back their
debts, such as the use of vouchers, mortgage, guarantees, installments, and financial transfer.
