The effect of training program for math teachers based on International Trends in Math and Science Study TIMSS on their students’ math knowledge, application, and reasoning

Abstract


This study aimed at investigating the effect of a training program for math teachers based on the International Study Trends in Mathematics and Science (TIMSS), on the ability of their students in mathematical knowledge, application and reasoning.
The quasi experimental design of two groups: Experimental (Training Program Based on the International Study Trends in Mathematics and Science TIMSS, and Control (normal way of teaching) was used in this study, where teachers and students of the study were chosen from two UNRWA schools in Amman as a purposive sample. The experimental group consisted of (67) students, while the control group consisted of (66) students.
In order to achieve the objective of this study, a training program, of (30) hours of training for teachers, was developed for five hours per week. Also three tests, for students, in mathematical knowledge, application, and reasoning were developed.

In the light of these findings, the study recommended the adaptation of the Training Program Based on the International Study Trends in Mathematics and Science TIMSS, and to include this program with other training programs for the preparation of pre-service and in-service teachers. Also providing short training workshops which address recent educational trends in the study of mathematics.
