Antimicrobial Activity of the Plant Extracts of Inula Graveolens and Inula Viscosa

Abstract


The leaves of Inula graveolens and Inula viscosa related to Asteraceae were extracted with petroleum ether, chloroform and ethanol. The yield of extracts ranged between 7.68% in Petroleum ether extract of Inula graveolens to 22.55% in chloroform extract of Inula viscosa.
Phytochemical screening showed the presence of flavonoids, tannins, and steroidal triterpenes in the two species. Saponins, coumarins, alkaloids and cardiac glycosides was not observed in any of them.
Antimicrobial activities of these extracts were determined by agar well diffusion method. 20,40 or 80 microliters (µl) of the plant extract (at a concentration of 5%) were poured in the wells.
Most of tested extracts showed some Antimicrobial activities, but the greatest activity was exhibited by the petroleum ether extracts of Inula viscosa. when we used 80 µl of this extract the diameter of the inhibition zone was about 30 mm for Bacillus subtilis.
Gram negative bacteria were resistant to the tested plant extracts.
