Abstract

This study examines the types of divorce in Amman in the years 1931 to 1946, based on the records of the Islamic Law Court. An analysis of the reasons for divorce reveals that the lack of intimacy, affection and well-being between the two parties are the most common cause of divorce. The most common type of divorce was khal‘, in which the woman forgoes her dowry or makes a cash payment to annul the marriage. It is clear that women in Jordanian society were beginning to gain their rights and become freed from the control of men.
