Abstract

This study was conducted at the Artificial Insemination Center / State Company for Services of Animal Resources / Agricultural Ministry, Abu – Ghraib, Iraq during the period of May 1st, 2002 to March 10th, 2003 to investigate the influence of age on sexual behavior and semen characteristics in Holstein – Friesian bulls. Nine 17 month old bulls weighing 350 - 450 Kg were used in this experiment. The total collected ejaculates were 387 (43 ejaculate / bull). Lower reaction time for the first mount, normal mounting as well as increasing deep thrust were more evident with advancing age of old bulls (p< 0.05). Except for the ejaculate volume which was higher (p< 0.05) for bulls at 17 months of age, greater mass (72.08 - 75.00 %) and individual motility (79.58 - 81.42 %) and lower dead (8.00 - 9.07 %) and abnormal (1.00 - 1.50 %) sperm contents were overwhelming found in bulls at 28 - 31 months of age. On the other hand, bulls of 27 and 28 months of age, had an obvious increase in sperm concentration (1426.0 × 106 and 1568.3 ×106 / ml, respectively) and number of sperms per ejaculate (9308.5 × 106 and 10587.5 × 106, respectively ). It is concluded that better sexual behavior and semen characteristics of Holstein – Friesian bulls in the Iraq were demonstrated in 28 – 31 month old bulls as compared with the younger
