Abstract

The study aimed at investigating the effectiveness of educational program based on the Theory of Mind in the development of competitive life practical skills to mentally retarded children in Jordan. The study consisted of (42) children (25 males) and (17 females), their age ranged between 8-15 years, and standard deviation of 1.88. The study designed an educational program based on the Theory of Mind included 39 training activities totaling 45.30 hours, also two lists were prepared for home and school environments observations to measure Life performance Skills. After data collection, arithmetic averages, standard deviations, T-test, and ANCOVA were used in the analyses of the results.
The study concluded with the following results: There were statistically significant differences at (α = 0.05) in home and school environment observation lists for the benefit of the experimental group that was exposed to the educational program based on the Theory of Mind, and there were statistically significant differences at(α = 0.05) between the male and female average degrees of mentally retarded children capable of learning life performance skills, as measured by the school observation tools for the benefit of males in the experimental group, and There are no differences between male and female individuals in the home observation tools. Also, There are no statistically significant differences at (α = 0.05) for interaction between the type of program and gender in the performance of mentally retarded children capable of learning life performance skills, as measured by the study tools which shows the lack of interaction. Based on these results, the study recommends the need for more studies in the future on designing programs based on the Theory of Mind in the development of public safety skills for mentally retarded children.
