Needs of Parents of Children with Autism in Saudi Arabia and it's Relation with Some Variables

Abstract


The aim of this study is to investigate the needs of Parents of Children with Autism in Saudi Arabia according to age, educational level of parents, severity of autism and monthly income. The researcher adopted the descriptive approach to achieve the aim of the study. The sample consisted of (87) parents selected randomly. The researcher developed a questionnaire to explore the needs of those parents, the questionnaire that was examined forreliability and consistencyconsisted of (35) items distributed on three domains.The findings of the study indicated that financial needs came first within the highest mean total was (2.57) followed by the basic needs of the family with mean of (2.56). Meanwhile, the social needs came in the last rank with a mean of (2.46), the total mean of the needs as a whole was (2.63).
Moreover, the findings related to age showed that there are no significant statistical differences at the level of (α = 0.05) attributed to age in all needs and as a whole. There were no significant statistical differences at the level of (α = 0.05) attributed to autism severity in all needs and as a whole. With regard to the educational level of the parent the findings showed that: there are significant statistical differences at the level of (α = 0.05) between educational level less than secondary from one hand and secondary as well as undergraduate from the other hand in the favor of the first. Finally, the findings of the income variable showed that there are significant statistical differences at the level of (α = 0.05) between income category (1000-5000) and (6000-10.000) in the favor of the first. The findings showed that there are significant differences between (6000-10.000) and more than 11000 categories in the favor of the latter.
Based on the findings of the study the researcher pointed out the need of conducting more studies on new samples within other variables, establishing specialized centers to pursuit the needs of autism children parents and providing the special needs for those children such as treatment, medical care, rehabilitation and support services.
